A CALL TO ACTION

An open letter from Irish Political Prisoner Terry Kirby.

01/05/98

A Chairde;

Now, more than ever, our efforts must focus on maintaining continued
support for the current peace process in Ireland. This open letter
calls all activists and Irish nationalists to make an extra press to
step up our lobbying efforts.

In the early 1970s, the nationalist communities in the North of
Ireland attempted to enter into settlement negotiations with the
English government. The result: Nationalist communities were ensnared
by curfew and barricade; nationalist prisoners in jails in the North
of Ireland were meted out torture, beatings and attempts on their
lives; and, in 1972 alone, 81 Catholics fell victim to sectarian
murder. Bombings, assassinations, the dirty protests, and ten men
dead on hunger strike followed.

In the aftermath of the death of Billy Wright on December 27, 1997,
loyalist death squads have issued threats of civil war, eleven
Catholic nationalists have been murdered or injured in the space of
a few days, and republican prisoners and the nationalist communities
face new threats of torture or attempts on their lives.

During the course of your busy work week, kindly take a few moments
to put pen to paper and write or fax the White House. Urge President
Clinton to fulfill his campaign promises by maintaining his efforts
to support the talks in Ireland.

Request that:

1. All suspended deportation proceedings and ongoing extradition
efforts against all Irish nationalists and their families in America
be dropped. Should the families be forced from the United States,
they are certain to face harassment, and several of the men will be
under threat of death if returned to Long Kesh prison. Prisoners
Terry Kirby, Kevin Barry Artt and Pol Brennan should be granted bail
during their appeals process.

2. The US Government maintain an active role in encouraging the
continuation of all-party talks.

3. The US Government likewise continue to monitor the current crisis
situation closely and provide whatever support is necessary to
maintain the safety of all nationalist prisoners and communities
under threat of harassment or assassination by loyalist death squads
acting with the collusion of the British army.

Please direct requests as follows:

Slan,

Terry Kirby
